PRIMARY SCHOOL
At our Burnie and Ulverstone campuses, the Primary School programme from Prep
to Year 6 is firmly anchored in a Christ-centred educational philosophy. Guided by
Leighland Christian School’s vision to be a Christ-centred learning community that
inspires, nurtures and equips students for life, and its mission to honour God through
excellence in education, we deliver the Australian Curriculum through the lens of a
biblical worldview.
Across all subject areas, students are encouraged to view learning as a meaningful way
to explore God’s creation, while growing in character, wisdom, and purpose. This
integrated approach supports both academic excellence and spiritual development,
nurturing students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged learners who
reflect the school’s core values of respect, responsibility, humility, integrity, and courage.
We prioritise excellence in Literacy and Numeracy, recognising these as essential tools
for lifelong learning and effective communication. Our structured literacy approach ensures
students develop strong foundational skills through explicit, systematic instruction. In the
early years, we focus on phonics, helping students master the building blocks of reading
and writing. As students progress through the primary years, we introduce morphology
—the study of word structure and meaning—which deepens vocabulary knowledge, spelling
accuracy, and comprehension.
Our literacy programme is informed by the Big 6 of Reading:
-
Oral Language – building rich vocabulary and expressive communication
-
Phonological Awareness – understanding sounds in spoken language
-
Phonics – connecting sounds to letters for decoding
-
Vocabulary – expanding word knowledge for reading and writing
-
Fluency – reading with accuracy, speed, and expression
-
Comprehension – understanding and interpreting text meaningfully
These six components work together to support confident, capable readers who are
equipped
to engage with a wide range of texts and ideas.
Our classrooms are vibrant and welcoming spaces where joy, curiosity, and connection are nurtured. We aim to create learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to discover and grow. Specialist lessons in Physical Education, Music, the Arts, STEM, and Languages Other Than English (LOTE) help students develop a broad range of skills and interests.
Through personalised learning, we recognise and respond to the unique strengths, needs, and interests of each student. Differentiated instruction, flexible groupings, and targeted support ensure that every child is challenged and encouraged to reach their full potential. Project-Based Learning allows students to engage with real-world challenges through collaborative, hands-on experiences that foster creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Our approach to wellbeing and behaviour is guided by restorative principles and a commitment to peace-building. We believe every child is valuable and capable of growth, and we seek to support them in developing empathy, responsibility, and respectful relationships. Our behaviour management practices reflect our Christian values, focusing not just on correction, but on restoration, reconciliation, and building a community where grace, understanding, and personal growth are central.
Dedicated Christian Living classes complement our academic programme, helping students explore faith, values, and personal development in age-appropriate ways. These classes support students in understanding who they are, how they relate to others, and how they can live with purpose and integrity.
