OUR CURRICULUM

Playgroup
We have two fantastic 'free play' Playgroups at both our Ulverstone and Burnie campus. Each run throughout each term of the School year. Playgroup provides an important stepping-stone for younger children to begin their educational journey and is a wonderful way for parents to learn more about the School culture.

Kindergarten
The School offers Kindergarten for three full days each week at Burnie and Ulverstone. Join with other new parents and share the experience and excitement of your child’s first year at school. Our Kinder program embraces the Early Years Learning Framework in a caring Christ centred environment. Kindergarten students are to be four years of age by 1 January.

Primary School (Prep - Year 6)
Across all subject areas, students are encouraged to view learning as a meaningful way to explore God’s creation, while growing in character, wisdom, and purpose. This integrated approach supports both academic excellence and spiritual development, nurturing students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged learners who reflect the school’s core values of respect, responsibility, humility, integrity, and courage.
We prioritise excellence in Literacy and Numeracy, recognising these as essential tools for lifelong learning and effective communication. Our structured literacy approach ensures students develop strong foundational skills through explicit, systematic instruction. In the early years, we focus on phonics, helping students master the building blocks of reading and writing. As students progress through the primary years, we introduce morphology—the study of word structure and meaning—which deepens vocabulary knowledge, spelling accuracy, and comprehension.

High School - Year 7 and 8
Year 7 through to Year 12 Education is available at our Ulverstone Campus. In Years 7 and 8 students receive the vast majority of their teaching from a core team of only six or seven teachers. These teachers develop an excellent understanding of individuals, enabling them to adjust the curriculum to meet the needs of all students.
During these first years of High School each child is encouraged to discover their God-given potential, developing work and study habits vital for their Secondary Schooling. Students enjoy a varied curriculum of core subjects arranged to work together in thematic studies across subjects, along with a range of electives. The latter enables students to make more informative decisions when making High School subject choices.

Secondary - Year 9 and 10
We strive to treat our students as individuals, framing education around their own personal development. We believe this is critical for students to catch a picture for their future that will help them build a vision for life.
High School should be a time of:
-
Personal Growth
-
Challenges and opportunities
-
Developing the whole student within a strong academic program
-
Maturing of life skills
-
Equipping for a life of Godly service
Staff at Leighland invest in the student’s educational and emotional wellbeing, strongly supporting them in the exploration of their growing faith. This commitment from the staff creates an environment where students and teachers are equipped to work very closely together, resulting in a culture conducive to our students being able to achieve very strong academic results.

Senior Secondary
Years 11 and 12 are well established and provide continuity for students without the dislocation at the end of Year 10 to attend a larger college to complete their pre tertiary studies. With small class sizes and a range of subjects available you can expect to be encouraged and supported in your educational goals. Years 11 and 12 are offered at the Ulverstone Campus for students participating in the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). The TCE is issued by the Tasmanian Assessment, Standards & Certification (TASC) which is responsible for the assessment and certification of Senior Secondary TCE syllabuses in Tasmania.
